As I was watching the public speaking Lynda tutorial, I couldn't help thinking about the book I'm currently reading - the Steve Jobs biography. Over and over in that book, it talks about how powerful of a speaker he was and how insanely well-received his speeches were. A part I read just a day or two before watching the tutorial talked about a commencement speech he gave that started with, "Let me tell you a story". And lo and behold, that's one of the main things the tutorial talked about - creating stories to make your audience pay attention and give them something to relate to. I think this is a great point. Our brains aren't really meant to remember figures, numbers, names, random dates...but we are meant to remember experiences.
Also - I really liked the checklists and storyboarding things she went over. I think a lot of the stress from public speaking can come from feeling uncertain about how the presentation will go - where will I be speaking? What if I go over my time limit? etc. A lot of this can be improved by practicing, but organizing information about your presentation and its location can give you an additional sense of security.
