I volunteered at Cucalorus last year as an usher, but I
didn’t really get the whole “Cucalrous experience” like I did this year. I saw films, hung out at Jengo’s, went to the
stuff at Ziggy’s, volunteered…pretty much the whole deal. I was placed in the Filmmakers’ Lounge, and
it was freaking awesome. I love the energy that surrounds events like
these, where you get into this kind of time and space warp where nothing
outside the festival matters. You just
exist in this hypercreative version of reality and put your whole life on hold
for a weekend to be with all these awesome people in the same world as you are. It was without a doubt one of the best
weekends I’ve had all year. The end of the festival left me all hyped up and
wanting to create something (while being simultaneously totally exhausted).
I really hope that we are able to make Visions4 have this
same incredible feel to it. I think a
lot of it had to do with how close and cool the venues are – it definitely adds
that hip, quirky vibe to the festival.
While Visions isn’t going for the exact same mood, I think we are trying
to do something similar. Having central
spaces, like Jengo’s and the Lounge, makes it super easy to meet people and
interact with new and old friends. Also,
Visions’ Thursday dinner and other events will definitely create closeness
between our staff and the guests. It’s
not just about seeing films or listening to talks - although those things are
obviously super important - but crafting an environment where you can meet new
people (or re-meet people you already kind of know) and make more meaningful
connections with them is absolutely the coolest.

The experimental shorts block
Borgman
The dance shorts block
The Sundarbans shorts
